Kings Langley Cricket Club 1st XI v Langleybury on Sat 18 May 2019 at 1.00
Kings Langley Cricket Club Lost by 5 runs (Rain affected)
Match report
Kings Langley continued to develop their world class reputation for being able to steal defeat from the jaws of victory as they succumbed to a 5 run defeat against Langleybury in a rain-affected match on The Common.
Having won the toss and chosen to field, Kings had a good start to the day with Harry Sambrook claiming an early wicket and restricting the visitors to 15-1 in the first 10 overs as the captain and George Langston showed good, early control. Mark Brazier and Jay Williams maintained that control over the next few overs and when Williams claimed the 2nd wicket the score was 48-2 from 21 overs. Liberty Maher joined the attacked and claimed the 3rd wicket to fall before the captain brought himself back to claim his 2nd (2-13) and leave Langleybury struggling on 82-4 off 31 overs.
The hosts were on top as the batting team struggled to get it away and when 3 wickets fell in 3 overs to Williams (2-27), Langston and Fidler it seemed like the innings might come to an abrupt end as they sat on 103-7 from 39 overs. However, a couple of loose overs, some sloppy fielding and a couple of dropped chances let them off the hook and when the rain came 5 overs later, Langleybury had reached 134-7 from 44 overs and it seemed that it was probably to the advantage of Kings Langley that the rain had come.
After a lengthy delay, and in damp conditions, the players would return to the field and to meet the necessity of securing a higher average run rate, the home side had a revised target of 71 from 23 overs to secure a first victory of the season.
There was surely only one winner... and even as Kings lost Jay Williams in the 2nd over, a little unfortunate to be trapped LBW to a short ball that skidded through at shin height, there seemed no need to panic. Jack Stokes would be the second wicket to fall and when Tom Sambrook followed him to the pavilion one ball later having been adjudged to have edged behind it was 13-3 off 5 overs. Harry Sambrook survived the hat-trick ball and he and George Langston steadied the ship over the following overs to put the chase back on track and they would put on 34 runs before Harry Sambrook (16) was given LBW, sweeping across the line of the spinner. Liberty Maher followed in the same over, again LBW, as he left a ball from the same bowler. This left the hosts on 47-5 in the 12th over, albeit requiring just 24 runs to win.
Mark Brazier (3) was next to fall and when George Langston finally departed for 14 after a resolute innings it was 54-7 and with just one side out, it was left to the 2nd team contingent to try to secure the remaining 17 runs. However, despite Sifan Naeem playing solidly he was left stranded on 5 not out as Colquhoun (1), Davis (1) and Fidler (4) found a variety of ways to be caught behind as the innings ended on 65 all out in the 21st over.
