Match report Kings Langley 1st XI returned to winning ways as they hosted Knebworth Park on Saturday. As a fruitless month of June drew to a close, the players put together a strong team performance to give themselves and the club a much needed boost on the field.
Knebworth Park won the toss and chose to bat and initially frustrated the visitors as the openers compiled a 35 run stand in the first 8 overs. However, 35-0 soon became 55-5 in the 13th over as Andrew Burnell (3-36) claimed the first of his breakthroughs followed in close quarters by Jay Williams (4-46) who claimed 3 wickets in his 2nd over. A 6th wicket partnership of 78 slowed the Kings Langley charge but they stayed patient and the hard work, in hot conditions, paid off as they eventually bowled Knebworth out for 167 off 44 overs. Ben Joyce, who at one point at figures 8-4-7-2 finished with 2-22 and Harry Sambrook (1-22) was the other wicket taker.
In reply, Kings Langley batted steadily throughout and a strong opening partnership between Tim Piper (27) and Paul Ashford (33) was only ended when the former retired hurt. The latter was the first wicket to be taken with the score of 74 but Jack Stokes (22) and Tom Sambrook (16) put on 38 together before both fell in quick succession to leave the score on 112-3. With 56 still needed for an elusive victory, there was still time for a wobble but luckily it never came, with Harry Sambrook (22*) anchoring the remainder of the chase as they reached their target of 168 with 5 wickets and 5.3 overs in hand.
Well played to the 1st team... can they make it two in a row when they travel to Broxbourne next week?
