Match report Kings Langley 1st XI slipped to a 55 run defeat in absolute run-fest as they visited Broxbourne on Saturday.
The home side won the toss and chose to bat and they got off to a flying start, courtesy of an attacking opener. When Ben Joyce (1-48) removed him, caught and bowled for 45, it was 54-1 in the 11th over. This allowed Kings Langley to start to regain some control and over the next few overs Jay Williams (1-48) and Liberty Maher (1-32) picked up a wickets before Matt Langston claimed a run out to leave Broxbourne on 116-4 at the half way stage. However, when the players returned from drinks, little did they know the carnage that was about to unfold! Over the course of the next 25 overs, Ridley (115*) and Sargent (123*) combined together to compile an unbroken 5th wicket stand of 229 and guide their side to a total of 332-4 from 50 overs.
In reply, Kings Langley knew there was a mountain to climb, but also that the pitch was flat and that a strong start would go a long way to putting Broxbourne under pressure. That strong start was soon delivered courtesy of Jay Williams (50) and Paul Ashford (71) who put on 84 for the first wicket. When Williams was caught, Ricky Mohammed (32) played his part in an 82-run 2nd wicket stand leaving the chase on 167-2 off 34 overs. With 10 an over required, the target was still possible but looking increasingly unlikely and when Ashford's excellent innings came to an end, the priority for Kings was to reach 245 and secure maximum batting points. Tom Sambrook (32), Matt Langston (36*) and Harry Sambrook (23) combined to achieve this goal and, in fact, the innings closed on a creditable 277-5 from 50 overs. This allowed Kings Langley to claim 14 valuable points in defeat and plenty of positives in to second half of the season, that starts with a visit from Ickleford next Saturday.
