Kings Langley Cricket Club 1st XI v Hitchin I on Sat 10 Aug 2019 at 1.00
Kings Langley Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets (rain affected)
Match report
Kings Langley 1st XI claimed both a vital and morale-boosting win against Hitchin as they kept their nerve to complete a rain-affected run chase.
Hitchin won the toss and chose to bat and worked hard to compile 182-8 in their allocation of 50 overs. Mark Brazier starred with the ball, picking up 3-36 in his 10 overs whilst Harry Sambrook (2-42) and Ben Joyce (2-34) picked up two apiece. Ricky Mohammed was the other wicket taker in a miserly 10-over spell of 1-23, having also picked up a fine catch in the outfield.
In reply, Kings Langley lost Paul Ashford (1) early on and when Ricky Mohammed (21) and Tom Sambrook (4) followed soon after the hosts were 55-3 off 15 overs as the rain came and forced the players off the field. When they eventually returned, their innings had been reduced to just 37 overs and with the league rules dictating that in rain-affected games it is simply decided by superior average run rate, this effectively gave them a new target of 135 to claim victory.
So, with 80 required from 22 overs, Tim Piper and Harry Sambrook set about scoring these runs. However, when Piper departed for 27 it sparked a middle-order collapse that soon left the hosts reeling on 96-7, requiring 39 off 9 overs. Nonetheless, amidst a couple of sharp showers and growing gloom, captain Harry Sambrook and Mark Brazier held their nerve to reach the target off the second ball of the final over, finishing on 42 and 23 not out respectively. The rules dictated that the over needed to be completed even with victory guaranteed and the score finished on 141-7.
The result means Kings Langley claimed 30 crucial points, enough to sneak them up to 8th and out of the relegation zone for the first time in weeks - although you feel that 2 more wins are probably needed from the final 4 matches to preserve their Division One status.
