Kings Langley Cricket Club 1st XI v Preston on Sat 24 Aug 2019 at 1.00
Kings Langley Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket
Match report
Kings Langley 1st claimed 30 crucial points on The Common as they edged to a nervy 1 wicket win against top-of-the-league, Preston.
Starting the day in the relegation zone and 3 points behind 8th place, once they were asked to bowl first, Kings Langley knew that every wicket could be crucial to their cause. As Preston seemed to be off to a flier, Ben Joyce (3-34) gained the first of his wickets in the 6th over and soon followed up with his 2nd two overs later to leave Preston 41-2 after 8 overs. Mark Brazier (2-38) then caused trouble with with his skiddy fast bowling as he claimed the next two wickets with the help of good catches by Lib Maher and Ricky Mohammed to leave the visitors on 67-4. A crucial period of play followed where Ricky Mohammed and Duane Smith combined well as a partnership to dry up the runs and build some pressure by racing through the middle overs. Smith finished with 1-29 off his 10 overs and in the end, Mohammed finished with quite incredible figures across two spells. He claimed 3 wicket and conceded only 3 runs to finish with 10-7-3-3. Ben Joyce returned to claim his third and then a run out off the final ball left Preston all out on 162.
With 10 points in the bag and an achievable target to chase, the top order knew that a couple of decent partnerships should see Kings Langley to victory. Unfortunately Ricky Mohammed fell early for 6 but Piper (13) put on 33 with Harry Sambrook. The latter then combined to put on 61 with Liberty Maher before falling to a sharp caught and bowled for 58. A further 20 runs had been added when a mini collapse saw the score go from 121-3 to 123-6 in the space of 2 overs. This left the home side needing 40 runs in 11 overs with Maher and Mark Brazier at the crease. They halved that number before Maher was run out for a vital and patient 44. When Nauman Hijaz departed in the 45th over there were still 10 required for victory. Rich Davis joined Brazier at the crease and just two runs were needed to win when Brazier departed for 20 as he sliced a pull shot to the fielder. Duane Smith was the last man in and he survived a close LBW decision as he blocked out the over and passed the baton over to Davis. He then gratefully watched a wide sail down the leg side to guarantee at least a tie and managed to survive the over to pass it back to Smith with 1 run needed in the final over. There may have been tension in the pavilion but this is Duane Smith! Professionally and on a cricket field; he always delivers. As he casually bunted the 2nd ball of the over through a vacant mid-on, victory was secured and 30 points in the bag.
Heading into next week, Kings Langley are now out of the relegation zone and face bottom of the league Knebworth Park. If they can claim victory, then it is possible they can go into the final match of the season with survival guaranteed.
