Match report Kings Langley 1st XI travelled to Hitchin on Saturday and endured another frustrating afternoon as they fell to a 6-run defeat.
In wet conditions the match was reduced to 38 overs per side and having won the toss, Kings Langley gladly took advantage of the opportunity to bowl first. Ben Joyce soon had the home side in all sorts of trouble as he claimed 3 quick wickets to reduce Hitchin to 6-3. He would later finish with impressive figures of 3-10 from 8 overs. At that point, Hitchin rebuilt slightly with a 4th wicket stand of 50 but when Liberty Maher (3-37) did break the stand it set the tone where wickets would continue to fall regularly. Andrew Burnell and George Langston took a wicket apiece and Christian James also claimed 2-19 en route to Hitchin being dismissed for 133 in the 38th over.
In reply, Kings lost Matt Langston in the 1st over but Jack Stokes (17) and George Langston (13) took the score to 30 before the former was caught. Wickets would keep falling fairly regularly and when the visitors were 50-6 the victory target seemed a long way away. Ben Joyce (33) and Andrew Burnell (31) then combined to take the score to 97-7 when the latter was bowled. Joyce continued with support from Elliot Hutchings but as time and partners ran out, Ben Joyce would eventually fall from the final ball of the match with Kings Langley still 6 run short of their opponent.
The 1st XI claim 12 points and are currently in 8th place in the league, hoping to secure a 2nd win of the season when they host Harpenden II on The Common next Saturday.
