Match report
Kings Langley got their season underway on The Common against Abbots Langley in a friendly that the visitors would eventually win by 20 runs.
In cold, overcast conditions, Kings took to the field with "great enthusiasm" as Abbots opted to bat first. The aim of the day was to warm up in every sense of the word, but particularly in readiness for the first league game next season and over the course of 30 rain, hail and possibly snow interrupted overs, captain Harry Sambrook gave 9 bowlers a much needed outing.
It would be bowler number 4, Nauman Hijaz, that would eventually make the first of four breakthroughs, as he modeled the potential of the wide, long hop with his first ball; Ben Joyce taking a spectacular one handed catch in the covers. It would be Liberty Maher whose safe hands were ready a couple of over laters when he repeated the trick. Ashil Raniga and Harry Sambrook took the other wickets to fall during the innings.
A highlight of the bowling performance was welcoming David Peters and Paul Fidler to bowl their first 'competitive' overs for 30 and 10 years respectively. Once they settled into their lines and lengths, they showed the potential they've been demonstrating in winter nets and will be a great addition to the club moving forward.
Abbots batted well throughout their innings and produced spells of dominant strokeplay, leading to a total of 196-4 from their allotted overs.
In reply, Kings got off to difficult start against some tight bowling with the captain losing his wicket early. Raniga and Fidler got some useful time in the middle but batting performance was all about two players. Nauman Hijaz pulled out some typically big shots in his innings of 41. comprising 3 sixes and 3 fours.
However, the star of the show was Tom Sambrook who was returning to the crease for the first time in 19 months following a serious achilles injury. He relished the opportunity as he a compiled a stylish century, eventually retiring for 100 having struck an impressive 17 fours and 1 six.
In the end, Kings would fall those 20 runs short of their target, closing on 176-3 from their allocation.
A promising start to the season and we look forward to league action as a three-team club again next Saturday!
